How to schedule classes as a marketing student

By: YuTing Shi

As most people are approaching that time of the year to schedule for their classes next semester, I wanted to share some of my insights and recommendations as a senior marketing student and as a Peer Advisor to all AMA members!

Before I get started on the details, I first want to clarify some confusion for people. Starting fall of 2022, OSU has created a new GE curriculum for all incoming Freshmen, titled “GE New”. This does not affect students who enrolled prior to Fall 2022, please use to “GE Legacy” when accessing specialization sheets or selecting courses. As a reminder, the minimum graduation requirement is 121 credit hours. You can check your progress towards graduation in Degree Audit (access through Buckeyelink at any time).

Section 1: Business Foundation/ Core Requirements

  • ACCTMIS 2200, ACCTMIS 2300, BUSOBA 2320, BUSOBA 2321

  • Listed courses are quantitative focused, I would suggest taking no more than 2 courses from this list in the same semester

  • ACCTMIS 2200 and 2300 is strongly recommended to take back-to-back when scheduling. For example, scheduling ACCTMIS 2200 in the fall and ACCTMIS 2300 in the following spring semester

  • Enrollment is for 16 weeks (full semester), including BUSOBA 2321 although it is 1.5 credit hours

Section 2: Additional Business Foundation/ Core Courses

  • Session Course: BUSMHR 2000, BUSFIN 3500, BUSML 3380

  • Full-semester Course: BUSFIN 3500, BUSFIN 3220, BUSOBA 3230, BUSMHR 3200

  • Capstone Course: BUSMHR 4490 (this course is typically scheduled during Senior year)

  • Listed courses can be completed during any semester prior to graduation

Marketing Specialization Prerequisites

  • All courses listed under Business Foundation of Section 1

  • BUSMHR 2292, BUSML 3250

  • Listed courses must be completed before you are eligible to enroll in marketing specialization course

  • It is recommended that you complete all the prerequisites prior to your Junior year spring semester

Section 3: Marketing Specialization Courses

  • BUSML 4201, BUSML 4202, BUSML 4203, BUSML 4204

  • 6 credit hours of additional Marketing elective courses (selected from your specialization sheet)

  • A minimum of 2 semester is required to complete all specialization courses

  • I would recommend taking BUSML 4201 and BUSML 4202 during your Junior year

Aside from GE, Business Core, and Marketing specialization courses, there’s still room for extra credit hours to reach 121 graduation requirements. There are plenty of programs and opportunities students can take part in to bring the most value from their degree.

Some programs you could join to help fulfill your graduation requirements while further developing yourself as a young profession includes:

  • Fisher Honors Program

  • Fisher Industry Immersion Program

  • Study Aboard opportunities (within Fisher or through OIA)

  • Deans Leadership Academy Certificate Program

  • Second Major outside of Fisher

  • Declare Minor(s)
