My LBrands Internship
by Eileen Wang
Hi, everyone! For those who don’t know me, my name is Eileen Wang and I’m the current Executive Vice President of our OSU Chapter of AMA! I’m a third-year marketing major with a minor in French, and I’m originally from Athens, Ohio. In this blog post, I hope to share a little bit about my marketing internship experience with a company based right here in Columbus, Ohio!
This past summer, I started my marketing internship at Victoria’s Secret, a fashion-retail company that specializes in women’s lingerie, sleep, and sport apparel. My experience with
working at LBrands, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret, has been challenging, rewarding, and most important of all- fun! Because of my incredible internship experience and my passion for the company, I actually accepted an offer to extend my internship part-time through the school year! So, I’m currently balancing between being a full-time student, while also continuing my marketing internship part-time at Victoria’s Secret.
My official title at Victoria’s Secret is as a Brand Marketing Intern, and I’m on the Marketing Strategy Team. Our team houses all marketing campaigns and efforts across in-stores marketing, email marketing, social media, and more. My specific role on the team is to support my manager in email marketing, meaning that I help with segmentation and creating content for the daily emails that our customers receive. While my day-to-day tasks revolve around ensuring that our email plans are reflective of our overall brand marketing strategy, I’m also able to gain exposure to other aspects of marketing including: digital marketing, in-stores, organic social, and paid media.
Additionally, I was assigned a main summer intern project focused on marketing collateral, which is basically any type of marketing that is printed and handed out in stores, placed in bags as bag stuffers after you make a purchase, or given as package inserts for online orders. While I was assigned objectives and deliverables for this project, I was able to take full ownership of this project and to make it what I want. I balanced my daily email responsibilities with leading this project with cross-functional teams. One of the things that initially shocked me was my ability to call meetings, set agendas, and assign deliverables to various business partners----me as an intern!
The end result of this project was an overall success. Around 20-25 people (including 2 AVPs!) attended my one-hour long project presentation and I managed to deliver my recommendations for the business in an engaging PowerPoint and visual board presentation. My project was a success because I was also able to learn so much by working with various teams and people of different backgrounds; I worked with the Store Ops Team, the Procurement Team, our Finance Partners, and even the Traffic Team!
With all of that said, my key takeaway is that internships are truly so valuable in helping students discover their career interests, gain real experience in their major, and develop their business acumen.
